Kitsch reacted with anger enough to sink his ship for the chance of hurting the aliens which prevented him from seeing the path he eventually t00k.

The reason the aliens didn't destroy Kitsch's ship was because he was deemed weak/non-threatening for ch00sing to help the Japanese ship.

Kitsch needed someone to help 'check' his anger (note: from a subordinate!) and Kitsch needed the self-discipline to stop and consider what might be a more productive path.
